Leather really is a beautiful material. That’s probably not a surprising thing to hear from a leatherworking blog, but we feel it bears repeating. Leather is warm, stylish, and incredibly long-lasting. Furthermore, no matter how the winds of fashion are blowing, it never seems to go out of style.
In other words: it’s timeless.
But what makes leather such a beloved material to work with? And why are we still using it for so many purposes today?
An Ancient Skill
For as long as humans have been around we’ve sought to use leather for all kinds of purposes. From clothes to bags, leather is both functional and practical. Warm, waterproof, and incredibly long-lasting, it’s no exaggeration to say that the process of tanning was one of the most important technological developments early humans ever made. Furthermore, as a byproduct of livestock farming, it fits perfectly into chains of production.
All in all, throughout the course of human history, there have been few materials that were so useful whilst also being comparatively easy to acquire. Leather really is a gift from nature that keeps on giving.
Over time, we’ve come to associate leather with a variety of historical periods. From the boiled leather of medieval soldiers to the brass and leather decor of the Victorian Era, animal hide has remained useful throughout the centuries in one way or another.
A Classic Look
New fashion doesn’t just spring up out of nowhere, and if you want to understand modern fashion then it’s good to understand how it’s informed by its roots. Put simply, a hundred years ago leather was still both a practical necessity and a sign of quality. If you wanted a good pair of boots then the quality of the leather was the most important signifier.
These days, although we have plenty of cheap, functional fabrics and textiles to use as an alternative to animal hides, that association between real leather and quality workmanship has never gone away. It’s evolved into an almost classical aesthetic, reminding us of a time when our notion of quality was closely associated with the outdoors, and with the farming of livestock.
A Modern Style
These days, our uses of leather have exploded out into all kinds of markets. From 1950s-style black greaser jackets to striking catwalk coats, modern fashion is as in love with leather as it has ever been. Meanwhile, the brown leather jackets and tool belts of old Americana are still as prevalent as ever.
So why is leather still so popular?
Well, we think it’s down to three reasons. The first is that it's incredibly useful, the second is that it reminds us of the past, and the third is - as we said right at the beginning - leather really is a beautiful material. Textured or smooth, in a variety of gorgeously dyed colors, real leather looks amazing. It always has done and it always will do.
]]>Taking up a new hobby isn’t always as simple as it sounds. Maybe you’ve got the motivation, maybe you’ve even got the time, but finding a skill that will inspire you to keep going, that will set your creativity free, and - perhaps most importantly - that will result in work you’re truly proud of, can be a lot harder than you might think.
Now, we can’t promise you that leatherworking will give you all those things. After all, everyone’s different and while we love the simple pleasure of seeing a leathercraft project through from start to finish, that doesn’t necessarily mean you will too. That being said, today we want to talk about why leatherworking is a great skill to dip your toes into even if you’re just a little curious.
Learning Leatherworking Is Fun
Let’s face it, we’ve all given up on something from time to time. For some of us, however, that’s more of a problem than others.
The truth is, the most difficult part of developing a new skill is sticking with it. Often times we imagine how much fun it will be once we’ve got through the difficult first patch, but getting through that patch is a lot harder than we’d imagined. The trick is to make learning fun and that’s a lot easier with some skills than others.
Put simply, learning leatherwork is a lot of fun so long as you go in with the right mindset. That means holding off on your most ambitious plans until you’ve mastered the basic skills and taking pride in every step of the journey.
Perhaps that sounds dull, but there can be a lot of satisfaction in managing your first straight cut or sowing a clean seam. You won’t be a master overnight, but if you come to see each milestone as another achievement, then you’ll have a lot to be proud of as you go.
Leatherworking Is A Creative Skill
Okay, so maybe you’re not so enthusiastic about the long road to mastery, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to flex your creative muscles early on. Even simple projects such as keyrings or cardholders offer lots of chances for fun, creative design choices. From choosing the leather to deciding on a shape and style, leatherworking will give you lots of opportunities - big and small - to do things your way.
Leather Gifts Last Forever
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again - leather is an incredibly versatile material. Signs of damage come slowly, if at all, and with good care, a leather item can last decades without showing any wear and tear. That means that if you make someone a gift - be it a birthday or Christmas present - it will likely be with them for years.
Here at Leather Treasure, we’re passionate about the joy of good craftsmanship and we hope that soon we’ll be able to share that joy with you. Have a happy new year, and we hope you’ll join us again soon on your leatherworking journey.
]]>Christmas is swiftly on its way and, for many of us, the cold weather and icy winds are already here. As the days get darker, it can be tempting to stay inside and keep warm, but it’s also important to see some daylight once in a while, which means wrapping up tight.
Here at Leather Treasure, we know that a winter coat needs to be three things: cozy, warm, and stylish. On top of that, it always helps if it can stand up to a little wear and tear. We believe that a good leather coat can meet all of these goals and more, which is why we’ve put together this list of three reasons to buy a leather coat this winter.
1. It Feels Warmer
When it comes to good insulation, you can’t do much better than real leather. As the product of millions of years of evolution, leather is nature’s ultimate answer to keeping out the cold, and, for as long as there have been humans, we’ve been borrowing it to make clothing.
Leather is lightweight, waterproof, and excellent at keeping in the warmth. Where many winter coats are bulky, even a thin layer of leather will do a lot to protect you from the elements without compromising on comfort. If you’re looking for a coat to keep you cozy, you really can’t go wrong with leather.
2. It Lasts Longer
Let's face it, in recent years faux leather has come a long way. It might sound scandalous coming from a leather store, but we’re not too proud to recognize quality when we see it. That being said, there are several counts on which faux leather will never win out over the real stuff and by far the biggest is its longevity.
Real leather can last for years without showing signs of damage, while the same cannot be said about its polymer-derived counterparts. Even when real leather does begin to age, the signs of wear and tear are slow to appear and can often give a nice vintage look to a piece. When faux leather ages it’s quick to crack completely breaking the illusion.
Real leather is always the way to go for a look that will age with grace.
3. It Looks Better
Okay, so we may be a little biased but, be honest with yourself, what better look is there than a nice leather coat?
There’s a reason leather coats never go out of style and that’s because they always look cool. They’re the perfect combination of sleek modernity and traditional comfort. From sweeping dusters to padded body warmers, leather has always lent a touch of class to any style of coat and it will no doubt continue to do so for years to come.
At the end of the day, leather really is the best all-purpose material you could look for in a winter coat. While it might not be able to protect you from an arctic storm, for practical, everyday usage, we believe you won’t find a better material on the market.
]]>When it comes to presents, the old adage almost always rings true - it’s the thought that counts. Presents are a chance for us to show how much we know and care about the people we love and what better way to do that than with a handmade gift?
If you’ve got someone in your life who loves authentic craftsmanship and beautiful, stylish accessories, then this year is the perfect opportunity to show off your leatherworking skills with some gorgeous handmade gifts.
Today, we’ve put together a list of five easy gifts for beginner leatherworkers to try their skills at. Don’t worry if you don’t have much experience, because we’ve made sure to include a variety of skill levels. As we move through this list we’ll go from fun and simple to intermediate, and even more challenging projects, so whatever your level, this list should have something for you.
With all that out of the way, let’s get to the list.
1. Jewelry
Now, if you’re new to the skill, jewelry might not be the first thing you picture when you think of leatherworking. If so, then you ought to check out some local craft fairs. From experienced artisans to DIY workshops, craft fairs are packed with fun, innovative uses of leather in the form of jewelry.
Of course, you don’t need to go traveling to find tutorials. A quick trip to YouTube will find you all kinds of fun, easy tutorials for how to make leather jewelry. If you’re looking for something super simple, then we recommend earrings as a great place to start.
2. Keyrings
Another easy place for beginners to get their start is with keyrings. A simple, single-piece leather keyring is quick to make and easy to replicate. And the real advantage here is that once you make one it’s easy to make more. They require very little leather and as you develop your skills they can be customized with embossing.
Before long, you’ll be giving a named keyring to everyone in your family.
3. Belts
Moving into a more intermediate-level project, belts are a simple way to push your skills a little further whilst also making something practical. While you will need a firm grasp of the basics, belts are an excellent chance to introduce a little more complexity into your projects without going overboard.
Also, who doesn’t want a gorgeous, handmade, leather belt?
4. Purses/Wallets
Now, at this point, we’re getting into the really advanced stuff. Purses and wallets are generally quite small items and, as a result, they can require intricate craftsmanship and good attention to detail.
That being said, if this doesn’t sound daunting to you, then you should definitely give them a go. A handmade purse or wallet is one of the nicest leather items a person can own and provides a great opportunity to show off your skills.
5. Handbags
Last but not least, if you’ve got a few years of leatherworking under your belt and you’re really wanting to impress then a leather handbag is one of the best ways to go. Although difficult, a nice leather bag would be a beautiful, high-quality gift, showing dedication and effort on the part of the maker. Not to mention, by adding a few personal touches, this is a great chance to make something you couldn’t buy on the high street.
Ultimately, whatever you chose to make, we’d like to wish you good luck, happy crafting, and a very merry Christmas!
]]>Are you hosting a Christmas gathering this year? If so, you’re probably wondering how to create an inviting, festive feel to your home decor.
This is the perfect moment to incorporate your love of leather into your home decorating scheme.
Your table will be the scene of cherished holiday memories. Make it extra memorable with unique leather containers spilling over with pinecones, evergreen branches, and delightful red holly berries. Go the extra mile by crafting adorable miniature snowmen out of leather, and placing them as a sweet decoration on each individual plate. If you just can’t get enough of leather table decorations, try crafting a collection of decorative snowflakes and poinsettia leaves to add to the table setting.
Use leather to create a unique and stylish centerpiece for your table. Just stitch a leather plant pot with a pattern of delicate mistletoe and holly, then fill it with evergreen branches to make a fun display.
Another option is to add leather trimming to some old candle holders. These will provide a lovely glow to your holiday meal. Scatter whole nuts and pinecones around them for added effect.
Engrave a motto like “Home For the Holidays” on a leather surface and frame it for some truly unique Christmas wall art. Another fun possibility is engraving a map of a place that has special meaning for your family, such as their hometown or their favorite vacation destination. This is a highly personal decorative item that perfectly fits the holiday theme, and can also be passed down from one generation to the next or even used as a Christmas gift.
Leather coasters, decorated with festive block patterns, are a fun and stylish way to personalize your holiday table. But you don’t have to confine yourself to using them as traditional coasters. Arrange them in decorative clusters around the table or place them together in a strip down the center of your table to give it a look that’s truly elegant. Another possibility is to use them as trivets for holding hot platters or using a leather paint pen and writing each guest's name on them at the dinner table.
Take a simple glass container and wrap it with gorgeous vegetable tan leather. Add some saddle hand-stitching with linen thread for a look that’s both natural and elegant. These simple vases will match any decor that you choose for Christmas and beyond. Fill them with arrangements of poinsettias and holly, and then swap these out for red roses afterward as Valentine’s Day nears.
Use festive metallic leathers and brass to craft beautiful wall hangers for your plants. These can be placed in your living room, patio, and entryway for a cozy, yet a fun party, effect.
A selection of decorative throw pillows offers a simple yet effective way to change your decorating theme with the changing seasons. Replace your everyday throw pillows with leather-accented pillows, sporting winter colors and patterns.
With these ideas in mind, you’re ready to use the timelessness of leather to create an unforgettable holiday celebration.
]]>Seasonal decorations are a great way to keep your home feeling fresh all year round. They offer a regular chance for change and a way for our homes to reflect the landscape outside. That being said, many people find it challenging to find seasonal decorations that don’t feel ‘tacky’ or mass-produced.
Here at Leather Treasure, we believe that leather decor is a classy and stylish way to bring Autumnal colors into your home. That’s why we’ve put together this list of five ways you can incorporate leather into your Thanksgiving decor.
1. Placemats and Coasters
For many, Thanksgiving Dinner is the perfect opportunity to show off their hosting skills. It’s a time to break out the fancy dishes, polish up the silverware, and put on a meal like no other.
And why not compliment this fine dining with some high-quality leather placemats and coasters?
Leather is a great material for placemats and coasters because it’s durable and easy to clean. Aside from that, it also brings a beautiful, traditional look to your home. What better way to celebrate Thanksgiving than with the timeless aesthetic of leather?
2. Planters
In keeping with the desire to have your decor reflect the outside world, planters are an excellent way to bring a little more nature into your home. Leather-bound planters combine the beauty of nature with the innovation of old-fashioned crafts, in a way that will give your home a unique, Thanksgiving-themed look.
3. Mugs
Now, it’s hard to deny just how gorgeous a nice, leather-bound mug can look. From complex embossed designs to a simple dark covering, leather-bound mugs have an almost medieval charm to them.
Even better, if you have a family, this decor suggestion can double up as a little pre-Christmas gift. Leather-bound mugs are easy to personalize and will bring a unique style to your home.
4. A Hide Rug
Moving into the winter months, anyone lucky enough to have a fireplace is going to be busy stacking up their logs and preparing for the cold weather. Hide rugs make for a delightfully cosy compliment to a roaring log fire, as well as a lovely place to lay your tired feet up. If you are looking for that classic American feel then animal hide is the way to go.
5. A Cornucopia
Last but certainly not least, we simply couldn’t make this list without taking a moment to pay homage to this iconic Thanksgiving decoration. The Cornucopia is a symbol of everything Thanksgiving represents, of the splendor of a bountiful harvest and of all the things we’re thankful for.
While, traditionally, Thanksgiving Cornucopias feature a wicker/woven horn, we’d like to suggest leather as an alternative for your cornucopia display. A leather horn would be sturdy and long-lasting while still making use of the kinds of traditional materials the pilgrims would have had at their disposal.
At the end of the day, however you decorate your home, it’s important that you find the look that’s right for you. Here at Leather Treasure, we hope your new decor will bring you joy and we wish you a happy Thanksgiving!
]]>What I love about working with various leathers is the colors and richness of the fabric. Also, the naturalness of its scent makes me feel connected to its source. Some may find this interesting, but when I'm working with leather (skin to skin), I know I'm touching something valuable.
I appreciate the history – especially how long it's been clothing humans and keeping us warm for hundreds of years. How it's been used becomes more personal and respected.
This way, I know the effort I put into my work will be valued and hopefully passed on to someone else because of the beauty it exhibits, like a masterful art piece.
]]>This is exactly what set our featured artisan, Mary Daniels on the path of discovery that birthed some of the most innovative, timeless and amazing leather designs you've come across.
Mary has always been a fan of recycling and is an unabashed fashionista that loves to rock her own pieces. There's no doubt that this discovery, the connection between leather and upcycling, seemed like a match made in heaven and it was a calling she didn't hesitate to answer.
In this edition of "Featured Artisan," we interviewed Mary Daniels asking how her journey started, her source(s) of inspiration, and many more.
There were several factors that inspired me to create my collection. One is the abundance of creativity that surrounds me every day. It was so much that I couldn't contain my ideas.
Creating just for myself wasn't satisfying enough. I wanted to share my leather art with others, so they too could experience the energy that I felt when wearing my designs.
Also, my friends and family encouraged me to create for others and let them see my art of unique creativity.
I started working with leather when I wanted to discard a garment. Not wanting to waste the fabric as it was in good condition, I started cutting it into pieces. The lambskin was so soft and flexible, so I said to myself, 'just make a strip to wrap around as a choker,' and that’s how the story begins.
I worked with that leather all day, cutting multiple strips and piecing them together into a complete neckpiece. I was amazed at the unique design and beauty of the red choker I had just created.
Leather is so versatile in weight. The texture and the lightweight leathers are considered skins, and the thicker leathers are hides. So I have a choice when deciding how I want my design to look, feel and fall on the neck if I'm making a choker.
If it's a WristSprout (cuff), the hides give my design a more structured look and feel. Another reason I was drawn to using leather was because of my view of not discarding leather that is still in good condition and recreating something beautiful and wearable again as in recycling. Leather also looks better as it ages with proper care and durability which to me means my designs will be around for quite some time.
What I love about working with various leathers is the colors and richness of the fabric.
My inspiration when designing my collections comes from many places. I'm surrounded by the original Creator's designs. So, seeing all of His beauty created just for our eyes only is an inspiration and truly appreciated.
My eyes always discover something old or new, like the variety of flowers, seasons, and other shapes or tangible objects. A perfect example is my Monstera plant, which was an inspiring piece to duplicate using different colors of green and maneuvering my fabric to curve and fall into place as I intended.
The outcome was satisfying and led to a beautifully unique choker. There are so many reasons that inspire me to create my unique pieces!
The important process for me when creating is to remain open to being different. I don't want to be afraid of uniqueness, as it's an important part of being an artist.
I'm the creator of the ChokeherSkins brand. Therefore, when I sit at my machine, I may not even know what I'm planning to design, but that's the beginning of creating something unique.
It's like putting your thoughts on paper and reading them aloud for everyone to hear. I feel everyone should be open-minded about their creative dominance and not allow others to change their energy as an artist, which is being a leather jewelry artist.
The genuine leather hides we use come with several advantages regardless of your skill level. If you are a veteran or you’re just creating an art piece, you are sure of creating something unique thanks to the leather’s quality. Also, it is extremely durable and it has a wide range of uses like - leather clothing, cosplay costumes, repair upholstery, craft leather accessories and more.
We source our leather from some of the finest and best Tanneries in Spain. Each leather hide is top-grade and they were hand selected by our Spanish team to ensure they meet our rigorous standards of quality. That’s not all, we ensure each leather skin has a unique finish and of an original character.
Why you may ask? The reason is not far-fetched, it’s because we want each creation that comes from our leather to have a true singularity. After selection, the leather hides are shipped to our warehouse in Arizona where they can be purchased by our eagerly awaiting customers. This way, you can always tell the source of your leather hides and you’re assured that our quality will never drop regardless of how large we expand.
Our leather hides are supple, thin, and lightweight, mostly being lambskin, and you can cut, mould or shape the material into any pattern you can imagine. If you’re a novice leatherworker or you’re just a DIY crafter, our leather can be sewn on your home sewing machine, meaning you don’t need any heavy-duty tools to work with it.
The only impediment to your creativity is yourself as you’re sure to come up with a masterpiece if you simply challenge yourself. We at Leather Treasure Shop offer many unique finishes such as; glittered, bubbled, metallic, snakeskin, embossed, rustic, and much more. The best part is that we are here for you. We are 5-star rated and offer great customer service, answering all of your questions before ordering to ensure you get the right hide for your project.
We hope this inspirational edition of our "Featured Artisan" will help you get started on that creative journey of your own. The feeling of creating a masterpiece from scratch or from recycled leather cannot be matched, so why don't you get started and share your craft with the world?

That’s what our featured artisan, Sabrina Lee, thought before she decided to take her leathercraft skills to the next level. After years of refining her craft, she finally developed the confidence she needed to create a fashionable work of art.
Sabrina always wanted a Celine Handbag but wasn’t willing to pay the high price of high-end fashion accessories. She took matters into her own hands (literally) and designed her very own Celine Look-a-like Travel Tote Bag with our beige leather hides.
In our very first “Featured Artisan” edition, we interviewed Sabrina Lee to learn more about her inspirations and leather crafting process to inspire your creative journey.
I love to make my own clothes, as it allows me to make designer-inspired clothes on a budget. Over time, I became interested in making handbags to complete my handmade outfits, which naturally led to my interest in leatherworking.
I also really love making handbags because I love to play with sculptural shapes, and it is often much easier to wear a sculptural handbag than a sculptural dress.
That led me to create my own line of handbags, Fukinsei Bags, featuring bags with unique silhouettes that stand out from the crowd.
When I first started making handbags, I would stick to using fabric because I was familiar with it as a garment-maker. After a while, I longed to get the look of a polished-looking leather handbag. Still, I was a bit wary of spending a lot of money on genuine leather when I wasn't sure I knew how to work with it, so I started working with faux leather, which I used to practice leatherworking techniques.
Once I became competent in those techniques, I decided to take the plunge and start browsing for genuine leather at stores in the Garment District in NYC (where I was living at the time). Having now worked extensively with faux and genuine leather, I can say for sure that there is truly nothing like the look and feel of a supple genuine leather -- it's like the difference between sewing with silk and polyester.
Of course, I love the look and feel of leather, as nothing even comes close to looking as polished and luxurious, in my opinion. I also love that leather can be supple or sturdy, depending on the weight and type of leather, giving you the freedom of a designer to make all sorts of shapes.
Like my large triangular-shaped tote bag, a supple, soft leather can be made into slouchy, casual-cool bags. You can get the free pattern on my website here. More structured, stiffer leather can be made into sculptural shapes, like my banana sling bag. You can get the free pattern for that here.
I also love that you can work with leather in all sorts of different ways -- you can emboss it, paint it, buff it, stamp it, etc. I am currently obsessed with wet molding leather, which is when you soak leather in water, stretch it over a mold, then let it dry into a 3D shape.
Other than my love for the versatility of leather, which I've already talked about, I also love that I can make designer-inspired bags and clothes using my own two hands for a fraction of the price.
So far, I have made a Hermes wallet and a Celine luggage tote. My next project is a Hermes Lindy bag. You can follow my progress on my Instagram or check out my blog for more details about my leatherworking projects.
I have found inspiration literally everywhere, but right now, I have two entirely different sources of inspiration: first, I'm inspired by classic designer handbags, and second, I'm inspired by sculptural, abstract shapes. I just can't limit myself to one category of makes!
I really love the brainstorming/material collecting initial phase of the project, when I dream about what I will make and think about the materials and techniques that I'll need to make it.
Once I've started constructing the bag, my favorite part is hand-sewing the leather pieces together -- I just find it so soothing and meditative, especially if I'm sitting in front of my window gazing at the view while I sew.
We hope this first “Featured Artisan” edition inspired you to take on the challenge of designing your own leather accessories. There’s no better feeling in the world than creating a luxurious leather item with your own hands. Imagine the feeling you’ll get when you show friends and family what you’ve designed.

]]>According to Popular Science, “most mainstream vegan leathers are made mainly from polyurethane leather (PU leather) which is not sustainable or even biodegradable."
If you’re looking for a socially responsible material for DIY crafting or leatherworking, it’s best to stick with genuine leather.
Besides leather, you could use other premium materials to create a variety of accessories, but none as versatile or durable as leather.
You’re probably asking yourself, “What makes leather material so special?” Here are 3 reasons why leather is an essential cornerstone of our culture.
Humans have engaged in leatherworking for over 7,000 years. The Egyptians used leather material to make their clothing, drinking vessels, and works of art. The Romans used leather material for boat sails and created other leather items similar to the Egyptians.
When you look back at history, you understand that leather material was essential to human civilization. In the modern era of humanity, the leather industry has a market capitalization of over $100 billion. It doesn’t seem likely that anything can replace leather with those numbers.
Anybody who’s ever owned a prized leather possession understands that leather improves with age and use, so you don’t want to get rid of it. The durability of leather material allows it to last for decades with proper care.
This key benefit prevents leather items of clothing from ending up in a landfill, making it better for the environment than faux leather or chrome tanned leather.
Leather is something personal, and there’s always a story behind it. Vintage leather items like leather jackets can be passed down from father to son. Sisters can exchange leathercraft jewelry.
As leather passes through generations, it only gets better with age. This reason is probably the most important reason why leather is forever.
So there you have it. To create something that will last forever, you need good old-fashioned, genuine leather. But, what shall your next project be?
If you don’t already journal, now is the time to start. It can help clear up your thoughts, discover hidden strengths or act as a vent for stress.
We have a wide variety of leather material you could use to create your journal cover. Woodworking doesn't mean you never venture out to incorporate non-wood materials in your projects. In fact, having something like leather can add even more rustic character to whatever it is you are working on. For example you've seen leather chairs with wooden frames and magazine holders made from wood and leather. However, you can go even simpler than that and if it sounds too intimidating, here are some DIY projects that seamlessly blend wood and leather together.
Farmhouse Wood and Leather Wine Rack
When you mix rustic barn wood with leather straps, you get an incredible DIY wine rack. What's great about this project is that it can either be fixed to the wall or hung. If you're a wine lover and love that rustic and weathered look, you are going to love this DIY project.
Woven Leather Stool
A DIY stool with woven leather will be a versatile piece of furniture that is simple to make, as long as you have a bit of time on your hands. When you use a hardwood like oak, it brings out the rich tones in the leather. This stool could be a standalone piece of furniture, or you could make a few and invite some friends over for great conversations sitting on your handmade chairs.
Wood and Leather Towel Shelf
Whether you have a small bathroom or just want to add a unique touch to it, a wood and leather towel shelf is a great DIY project to do. A nice bonus is that you also get a little bit of storage space on top of it, or for displaying some decor. With only a few materials needed, you can finish this one in no time.
Wrapping Up
Wood and leather are great together when it comes to DIY projects. These are just some projects you can do, but there are many other possibilities. Once you move out of solely working with wood, you will see just how much more dynamic your DIY projects can become.
Make sure you are using quality leather in your wood and leather projects. Leather Treasure Shop has premium Spanish leather skins that are great for DIY projects. You will have access to leather that will look extraordinary on your wood and leather creations.

What's more, as it gets older, it will age beautifully.
DIY Leather Tablet Case

You want to have that workshop you've been thinking about, but you don't have that much space. Not a problem! When you follow this quick guide, you will be able to set up a small home workshop, even if you have minimal space. All it takes is some careful planning and preparation.
To make sure your workshop is functional, you need to map out the space you have available for it. Some power tools will take up quite a bit of room, so you should decide early on where they should go. When you make up your plans, ensure that is is possible to place your largest tools up against a wall when you aren't using them.
Keeping your tools organized is essential when working with minimal space. It will not only make your projects easier to do but more enjoyable as well. Consider getting a tool chest. It's larger than a toolbox and will be effective in storing your tools when they're not being used. You can also use pegboards. These are great for keeping tools at arm's reach that you will be using regularly.
Stationary equipment takes up a lot of space. Having your tools mounted on wheels that can lock into place makes it easy to move them as you need to. Another way to make your tools and equipment more portable is to get a folding table. When you're not using it, you simply fold it up and stow it away. You can also just get a pair of saw horses, which take up minimal space.
Just because you're limited with your space doesn't mean you will be unable to have a functioning workshop that you enjoy working in. When you follow these major tips, you will make working in a home workshop with minimal space more accessible and more enjoyable.
If you're looking for high-quality leather for projects you want to take on in your workshop, Leather Treasure Shop is the place to get them. Featuring premier Spanish leather skins, you will be able to choose from genuine leather hides, leather scraps and pieces, as well as related supplies and accessories. ]]>Leatherwork is a highly-rewarding hobby and craft that anybody can take up. You allow yourself to be creative, while making rugged items out of leather that will endure overtime. If you want to embark on a journey into the world of leatherwork, you are going to need some tools. Once you have these, there is no stopping you from creating things out of leather that you will be proud of.
Below are the essential tools every beginner leather craftsman should have.
Since you will likely be buying a leather hide, you will need a good cutting tool made for cutting leather. This could take the form of a regular utility knife, rotary cutter, Xacto, round knife, a box cutter, or a pair of sharp scissors (something almost everyone has at home already). Whatever you decide on will largely come down to what type and thickness of leather you are working with, and of course, personal preference.
Before you can start stitching leather, you need to create holes for the stitches. This is where a diamond chisel comes in handy. You will be able to seamlessly punch holes through leather in various widths and sizes which will enable you to then pass your needle through ¨pain free¨ and easily.
In order to effectively use a diamond chisel, you are going to need a mallet. You don't need anything too fancy here; just a simple rubber mallet will do. You will just want to make sure you are making clear strikes, as to not damage your chisels.
For hand-stitching and even for your sewing machine a good leather needle is key and probably the most important tool for your leather projects. Hand stitching needs will come in all different sizes and thicknesses depending on your thread and the leather you are using. It is wise to invest a bit more in a good needle as it can make your sewing experience a lot more pleasant.
To go along with the stitching needles, you need thread. While natural threads look and feel rugged and nice, they are likely to degrade other time. This is why synthetic threads are preferred over something like cotton. Whatever you decide on, make sure the thickness matches the needs of your project.
Working with leather is something that is an enjoyable hobby or craft. These are the basic tools you will need if you want to become a leather craftsman. There are other tools that will be able to take your hobby to more advanced realms, but starting out, these will be all that you will need.

]]>You may think of leather as something that is just that: leather. However, there's several flavors to this material, which may surprise you! We are going to go over four main types of leather you will find, which are used in everything from jackets to chairs. Without further ado, let's get right into them.
Leather is considered top grain material if it is modified in any way. When the entire grain stays intact, it is full grain. Full grain leather may have certain blemishes, yet maintains a high price tag. Although Full Grain leather gets a lot of hype but Top grain leather is what is most widely used because it is a durable type of leather that keeps for a long time. Full grain and top grain leather are close enough to one another that they are considered in the same category of leather, yet top grain is more preferred. When there's grain visible, it's either full or top grain leather.
While grain leather can be split into either top or full grain, it can be broken down further into three categories: aniline, semi-aniline, and protected leather. Aniline leather is processed using soluble dyes to protect and extenuate the natural texture of the leather. Semi-aniline leather is treated with pigments or coatings, which can hide some of the unsightly blemishes, giving the leather a homogeneous look, as well as protecting it and making it a more resistant leather. Protected leather is sourced from the middle section of an animal hide. It will then get a colored spray top coating applied to it, which protects it. After that, natural-looking grain will be pressed into it.
When leather is initially separated from an animal hide, it is very thick especially in cowhide, which is why it becomes split into layers. For example suede is made from the underside of the split leather creating a soft plush finish. This is a type of leather is frequently found in products such as upholstery, furniture, work gloves, and shoes.
The last major type of leather is bonded leather. This is the lowest quality leather you will find. In fact, it is made of shredded leather parts and reconstituted using an artificial bonding agent, along with getting coated with embossed polyurethane. It is both the most inexpensive and the most inferior type of leather. Cheap furniture and accessories are bound to have this type of leather.
If you want to get the highest quality top grain leather, browse the wide selection and collections at Leather Treasure Shop.
